Artist's Statement - Collecting Idle Art
Mixed media, assemblage and collage are particularly interesting to me since many facets of art and materials are represented. Even though my work is very different in manner of application and the corresponding finished results, one thread of continuity exists--the utilization of materials found, usually items that were no longer thought to have value. Implementing mundane objects beyond their traditional use is challenging, personally rewarding, beneficial to the environment and sometimes humorous.
A found object, intriguing in itself, when combined with many of the same should create greater interest. It sometimes takes many years to collect enough material for a project, and as the cache increases in size, time is allowed to determine an idea for that particular object. Collecting is an on-going process, and frequently one project leads to the idea for another. Art history plays an important role in my work. It is refreshing to note art is alive and well in the state of Kansas since many people from all over the state contributed material for my projects.
Recent Comments About My Work
Dominic Molon, Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago wrote, “Joelle Ford's Circles of Color: Series 1A and 1B, ingeniously take a familiar situationthe residual presence of paint on the inner tops of paint cansand converts it into an engaging abstract pattern of colors through preexisting forms, twisting the mundane into something unexpected. Her works also blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture, absorbing the logic of both practices at one and the same time.”
Rick Mitchell, Gallery Director, Lawrence Arts Center wrote: “Lawrence's Joelle Ford is a joyful artist, delightful and ingenious in her approach to materials of all kinds. For years she has made fresh new works of art from ordinary items she has collected--sometimes for years before she envisioned the objects that would be composed of them. She has made surreal furniture by combining parts of conventional household items and used color with the sophistication of the best colorfield painters-with surety and taste while at the same time surprising us with those she displays together. Her new works at the Lawrence Arts Center are instant Ford classics.”
