puppet designer and fabricator, actor
Spencer Lott is a freelance artist and actor who specializes in designing, fabricating, and performing puppets for film, television, and live stage productions. In 2010 he graduated with distinction from the University of Kansas with a degree in theater and classics. Spencer was a member of the Artistic Direction Committee for the 2011 and 2013 National Puppetry Festivals. He was a guest artist for Theater Development Fund’s Stage Door program and is a member of the teaching artist ensemble at the New Victory Theater in NYC.
Spencer has studied puppet building at Puppetfest Midwest and the Eugene O’Neill National Puppetry Conference and was an Emerging Artist at the 2009 Conference. Spencer has worked as an assistant builder for the Paul Mesner Puppets, Inc., the Puppet Kitchen, the Lawrence Arts Center, and the New Theater Restaurant.
Spencer’s work has been seen in television pilots and online commercials for Tallgrass Brewing Company and GiftProfessor.com. His short film Cupcake was featured on Funny or Die.com and screened at the Puppets on Film Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in November of 2012.
As a performer, Spencer created a touring puppet company, Squiggle Puppet Productions, which lead to performances around Kansas and Missouri when he was sixteen. Recently he has performed in puppet slams in Kansas City, New York and Chicago as well as the National Puppet Slam at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta. Spencer was a part of the December workshop of “The Boy at the Edge of Everything” with Trusty Sidekick Theater (NYC) and is currently developing a short puppet film, Woodpecker Love Story, and an original puppet play, Explorations of Flight.
The Lawrence Arts Center is pleased to have Spencer Lott as a resident performing artist for the winter 2013 production of Escape from the Labyrinth.
